You Can Add to the Debate

CNN, Google, and YouTube want you to ask the questions at the upcoming July 23rd Democratic presidential debate. This is your chance to ask the tough questions on ending the war in Iraq. Can you help out with a tough question or two about ending the war?

Submit your video questions
http://youtube.com/debates

The first debate will feature the Democratic candidates on July 23rd in Charleston, South Carolina. Submit your question for the Democrats between June 14 and July 22 (the earlier the better). The CNN political team will choose the most creative and compelling videos, and if yours is one of them, you may get the chance to fly to Charleston to watch the debate live and offer your reactions afterward on YouTube's political video blog, Citizentube.

Ann Coulter wishes Senator Edwards Dead

How low and disgusting can a person get...This Monday, Ann Coulter took her pattern of personal attacks to a new level. On national television she said that rather than hurling more homophobic slurs,

"If I'm gonna say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."

Happy Flag Day

Did you know today is the 230th anniversary of the American flag? Happy Flag Day!

Each year on June 14, we celebrate the birthday of the Stars and Stripes, which came into being on June 14, 1777. At that time, the Second Continental Congress authorized a new flag to symbolize the new Nation, the United States of America.

The Stars and Stripes first flew in a Flag Day celebration in Hartford, Connecticut in 1861, during the first summer of the Civil War. The first national observance of Flag Day occurred June 14, 1877, the centennial of the original flag resolution. By the mid 1890's the observance of Flag Day on June 14 was a popular event. Mayors and governors began to issue proclamations in their jurisdictions to celebrate this event. In the years to follow, public sentiment for a national Flag Day observance greatly intensified. Numerous patriotic societies and veterans groups became identified with the Flag Day movement. Since their main objective was to stimulate patriotism among the young, schools were the first to become involved in flag activities. In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of Flag Day on June 14. It was not until 1949 that Congress made this day a permanent observance by resolving "That the 14th day of June of each year is hereby designated as Flag Day . The measure was signed into law by President Harry Truman.

Although Flag Day is not celebrated as a Federal holiday, Americans everywhere continue to honor the history and heritage it represents.

Immigration Bill's Demise A Blow To Bush

The Senate yesterday fell 15 votes short in an attempt to invoke cloture end debate and proceed to a final vote on the bipartisan immigration compromise bill. Most commentators see that failure as the collapse of the effort to reform the immigration laws at least for this session of Congress.

4 years down, 46 to go

According to the White House, Iraq isn't George W. Bush's Vietnam -- it's his Korea.

Last week, Reuters reported that "President George W. Bush would like to see a lengthy U.S. troop presence in Iraq like the one in South Korea to provide stability but not in a frontline combat role. The United States has had thousands of U.S. troops in South Korea to guard against a North Korean invasion for 50 years."

The American people voted last November to end the war in Iraq -- not occupy a country engulfed in civil war for decades. A 50-year plan for Iraq is not a strategy and it's certainly not acceptable. But tonight, as the Republicans square off in their third big presidential debate, you can be sure you'll hear the Republican candidates fall in line with their Commander-in-Chief.

Write a letter to your local newspaper, and let your neighbors know just how out of touch the Republican Party is with your community:

http://www.democrats.org/50years 50 Years in Iraq?

The 2008 presidential hopefuls are already offering their support for the "Korea plan." On Friday, John McCain said:

"We have had troops in South Korea for 60 years and nobody minds...If you stay a long, long time, but have the Iraqis doing the fighting, and your people are back in the bases and away from the firing line, I think Americans would be satisfied."

In the most recent CBS News/New York Times poll, 72 percent of Americans disapproved of President Bush's handling of Iraq. Looking back, 61 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. never should have taken military action against Iraq in the first place.

The American people opposed the escalation. They opposed President Bush's timetable veto. And they oppose a 50-year war.

Now the dozen or so Republican presidential candidates vying for his job want to continue this same failed strategy. We can't let that happen.

Write a letter to your local paper about the Republican Party's plan for failure:

http://www.democrats.org/50years

The Democratic Party agrees: it's time to end the war and refocus on fighting terrorism and strengthening our national security.

Those are our values, and those are America's values.

Sincerely,

Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

Bush’s Greenhouse Gas Proposal Is Hazy (Rep. G.K. Butterfield)

While it’s encouraging that President Bush may finally be accepting the seriousness of greenhouse gas emissions, his vague plans for technology transfers and voluntary emissions targets will not resolve the issue. There’s a pressing need to address the issue of global warming, and the solution must recognize the urgency.

President Bush’s proposal duplicates and could undermine the ongoing efforts to build on the Kyoto Protocol and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It is unlikely that a parallel effort would result in a new international agreement that truly addresses global warming.

As the world’s leading emitter of greenhouse gases, we have an obligation to convincingly lead the way forward. If the United States fails to limit its own pollution, it is unrealistic to believe that India or China would do so. To resolve this crisis, we must work with the rest of the world to agree on binding goals and a protocol for international enforcement.

Support Stem Cell Research

For too long, Americans have been denied hope because this President and Republicans in Congress put ideology over sound science and have refused to act.

The House takes up SB 5, Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act OF 2007, a bill to "to require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct and support research that utilizes human embryonic stem cells, regardless of the date on which the stem cells were derived from a human embryo." The Senate passed this bill already. President Bush is expected to veto the bill. Tell the House and President Bush your views on this bill and this issue by visiting:
